Esters

Naming

Naming of esters is done in two parts.

The first part is derived from the alcohol, and this will be an alkyl chain. If the alcohol is methanol, it will then be methyl. If the alcohol is 2-methylpropanol the chain would then be 2-methylpropanyl.

The second part comes from the acid, and the acid name changed from –anoic to –anoate, so ethanoic acid would, therefore, provide the ethanoate part to the ester.
